St John the Baptist Church, Pitchcombe

St John the Baptist Church in Pitchcombe, is a Grade II listed building lying in the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) overlooking the Painswick Valley. Our church and church yard has recently been accredited with A Rocha UK’s bronze eco-church award.

As well as being a quiet place of prayer, our church building is home to regular times of Sunday worship and for, example, monthly coffee mornings and church meetings. Being part of a larger church family, the Beacon Benefice, means we host times of united worship, too, and our monthly Holy Communion services also usually features the organist and choir largely from our neighbour church, St Mary’s in Painswick.

The ‘open’ churchyard, with its stunning views across the valley contains numerous table-top tombs, along with two war graves and a war memorial, which is central to our annual Act of Remembrance.

Pitchcombe Church benefits from an excellent heating system, WiFi, a kitchenette area at the back allowing for delicious refreshments to be enjoyed after our services, and of course the adjacent Village Hall with its modern facilities and ample parking are a huge asset www.pitchcombevillagehall.co.uk.

This all helps to ensure the church remains an important focus for the village’s spiritual and community life. As well as baptisms, weddings and funerals, many of our special festivals and services, including our annual Flower Festival, Harvest and Christmas Carols Service, are coordinated and celebrated with partners in our community across both sites.

The history of St John the Baptist Church, Pitchcombe…

The Norman church on the site was known as the “Pitchcombe Cradle” and dated from 1376. The present church was built in 1819 and was paid for by public subscription. It houses a single bell dating from the 14th century, along with four 17th century tablets depicting the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer and the Ten Commandments. The church has recently undergone extensive renovation including a new roof and a newly refurbished reredos. Everyone is welcome at St John The Baptist Church, Pitchcombe.

       Discipleship

Being new to a community can feel daunting, but it is also an opportunity for welcome, support, and belonging. A church can provide a place of spiritual grounding, friendship, and encouragement, where newcomers are not just visitors but are embraced as family in Christ. Beyond worship, the Beacon Benefice offers a network of care—helping people connect with others, serve together, and find comfort in times of need. By opening its doors and hearts, the church helps transform a new place into a true home.

Prayer & Worship

We hold a variety of services around the Benefice at different times of day. All our welcome at these services.
If you are new to church, please feel free to come along and join us.
